1.1 Nucleotide-sugar interconversion pathways

Genes encoding enzymes of the nucleotide-sugar interconversion pathway segregate into seven to nine families based on putative homologs in bacteria for which functions have been confirmed. Three Arabidopsis genes have been confirmed based on characterization of mutants - the uge4 of the UGR family of UDP-Glc C-4 epimerases, mur1(gmd2) of the GMD family of GDP-Man 4,6-dehydratases, and the mur4 of the UXE family of UDP- xylose C-4 epimerases.

Beginning with UDP-Glc, the interconversion pathway is responsible for the generation of seven monosaccharides. RHM1 through 3 (UDP-L-Rha synthases) and UER1(Epimerase-reductase in UDP-L-Rha synthesis) and thought to be involved in synthesis of the deoxysugar, rhamnose. UGD 1 through 4 are suspected to encode UDP-D-Glc dehydrogenases which oxidize UDP-D-Glc to UDP-D-GlcA. The six GAE members are suspected to encode UDP-D-GlcA C-4 epimerases that produce UDP-D-GalA. Recently, and AXS1 gene was identified in Arabidopsis that encodes a UDP-D-apiose.UDP-D-Xyl synthases, as are three SUD members that are missing membrane anchors. Two GER members of GDP-L-Fuc synthases are 3,5-epimerases that work with a GMD. GER activity alone would produce Interconvert GDP-D-Man and GDP-L-Gal.
