1.3 Pathways of phenylpropanoid biosynthesis

Lignins are assembled from monolignols, which represent the end products of the shikimate, or chorismate, pathway. Hydroxycinnamic acids, which originate from the deamination, carboxyl lyase, and oxidation of phenylalanine and tyrosine, are commonly incorporated into type II walls, whereas their reduction to aldehyde and alcohol constituents represent the transition pathway to lignins. Mutations are found in most of the genes encoding the machinery for this pathway.
