5.3 Cellulose and associated matrix polysaccharides

Cell walls are the plant’s interface with its environment or it’s contact point with neighboring cells. Thus, the structural elements of the wall serve as a sensory panel for signal transduction when plasma membrane located receptor kinases are integrated with the structural framework. Several mutants have been identified in this category that have defects in abiotic and biotic interactions as well as in developmental signaling that results in defects in anatomical features.
